Phantom of the Opera

The classic Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera. This is the 2005 version starring Emmy Rossum, Gerard Butler, and Patrick Wilson. Emmy Rossum plays the young Christine Daae who finds herself stuck in a very dangerous love triangle with Raoul (Patrick Wilson) and the Phantom (Gerard Butler). Christine and Raoul are childhood sweethearts who get reunited when Raoul becomes the owner of the opera house where Christine is a ballet dancer. When the diva soprano Carlotta (Minnie Driver) leaves refusing to sing in the show on opening night Christine sings and is discovered to have a beautiful, pure voice. The Phantom hears Christine sing and falls in love or more becomes obsessed with her. The story is now set. Christine is caught between the love of the ultimate prince charming and the dangerous bad boy. I am happy to say that it is Christine who ends up saving the day. How? Well, watch the movie to see.
All of the actors actually sing in this movie except for Minnie Driver. Emmy Rossum's voice is absolutely beautiful and I admit that I am jealous of her singing voice every time I hear her. There are some mistakes or just head scratching moments though that I noticed. First, the movie is staged in France, but Miranda Richardson who plays Madame Giry is the only actor who tries to fake a French accent. The rest just stick with the American accent. Second, there are some scenes where Christine's hair is down upon her face and a second later it is pulled back. Lastly, well this isn't really a mistake just something that I want to mention, is that I cannot understand half of what Carlotta is saying in the movie.
Well, that is really all I have to say, but I hope if any of you haven't seen this movie you should. It is a classic, the music is wonderful, and the story plot is well written. It definitely is a movie that will set your imagination on fire.

I am so glad you chose this film to write about this week. This is one of my favorite musicals and I too am jealous of Emmy Rossum's beautiful voice. I have noticed a few of the mistakes you mention but not all, so the next time I watch the film I will be looking out for them. Just wondering whats your favorite musical? Looking forward to your next movie choice.

Have you ever seen the live production of it? It is phenomenal!! It wasn't on Broadway, I saw it down in Tucson, but it could possibly be one of the most powerful shows I've seen. And I wasn't at all disappointed with the movie, there were a few differences, and an all new song, but the harmonies in it are freaking AMAZING! And i agree with the accents being from different places even though they are all from the same place, but it is kinda hard to sing in an accent. I know, I've done it.
